The Cleveland Clinic Center for Advanced Research in Human Reproduction, Infertility and Sexual Function (CARHRISF) was founded in 1993 and is part of the Cleveland Clinic Health System. One of the many specialties of this branch of the clinic is sperm banking. Much of the center’s efforts are geared towards cancer patients wanting to store their sperm for personal use only due to upcoming treatments or procedures.

As with most sperm banks, sperm banking at the Cleveland Clinic’s CARHRISF is an outpatient procedure that can be done at almost anytime. However, it’s ideal for cancer patients to bank sperm before beginning chemotherapy or undergoing any procedures. In addition, they should bank multiple samples to increase the likelihood of producing a pregnancy in the future. For optimal semen samples, sperm deposits should be made 72 hour apart. If time is of the essence, deposits can be made as soon as 24 hours apart.

Sperm can be stored for an indefinite amount of time but researchers have not confirmed successful pregnancies from sperm frozen too much beyond 10 years as of yet. It’s also important to keep in mind that though use of cryopreserved sperm to impregnate women has a success rate that is constantly rising, there is no guarantee that your sperm will produce a viable embryo and successful pregnancy.

The national average costs of sperm banking is $1500. That figure includes the processing and freezing of three sperm samples and storage of those samples for five years. Check with The Cleveland Clinic for specific rates for collection, preservation and storage.
