Time, dedication and the ability to test well. That’s what it takes personally to become an anonymous sperm donor for Xytex. Physically, there are a number of other standards that must be met.

Potential Xytex donors must be between the ages of 18 and 38 and live near a Xytex sperm banking facility. Take your pick between Augusta, GA and Atlanta, GA. As a result, many candidates are recruited from college campuses and through referrals of current sperm donors.

The first step to becoming a Xytex sperm donor is to call for an initial evaluation. If you are deemed an appropriate candidate, you will be asked to fill out an extensive medical history questionnaire. A specialist will review the medical history and if everything looks okay, you will be asked to produce an initial semen sample for further evaluation.

From that point, you will go through a variety of tests including evaluation for genetic disorders, sexually transmitted diseases and overall physical fitness. Meanwhile, your semen will also be analyzed for sperm count, mobility and overall quality. In addition to all of that testing, you will be interviewed by Xytex staff to assess the psychological and behavioral traits of each candidate. The entire qualifying process takes approximately six weeks.

As a donor, Xytex will require that you make a one-year commitment to the anonymous sperm donor program. And those tests you went through during the initial application process, you’ll have to re-do those every six months as long as you’re a participant in the semen donor program. In addition, you are encouraged to deposit sperm at least once per week with 3 days of abstinence before each sample is given. Each specimen you provide will stay in quarantine for six months before being released for purchase by a potential recipient.

All Xytex donors are released from any financial right to any children that may result from use of their sperm. In addition, donors relinquish all parental rights to a resulting child when they join the Xytex anonymous sperm donor program. Some information about donors is supplied to recipients of your sperm but unless otherwise directed, it will only be non-identifying information—height, eye color, blood type, ethnicity, etc. It’s also common to release information about your education, profession and your family’s medical history (as documented on your application) to recipients. In addition, Xytex also allows donor to make more personal information available for potential recipients: childhood photos, adult photos or live audio interview.

Men donating sperm with Xytex who are indifferent about anonymity do have the option to sign up for ID Release. Donors who opt for ID Release agree to let personal identifying information to be revealed to their offspring once the child turns 18. The child is then able to attempt to find the donor if they so choose.

Sperm donors are paid $65 for each acceptable specimen. In addition, current donors receive $20 for every donor candidate they refer that is accepted as a donor. If that candidate agrees to be a donor himself, the donor who initially referred him will receive $100.
